Cable accessories need more than a conductor size

UD Fomra Group

For a cable joint or termination, send the cable datasheet and the equipment connection details with your enquiry. The conductor size is useful, but it is not the complete selection. The accessory has to suit the cable construction and the connection it will make.

Identify the connection first

Is the requirement for a straight joint, an indoor termination, an outdoor termination or a connection to switchgear? Put that answer at the top of the enquiry. A photograph can provide context, but it should accompany the drawing or equipment details rather than replace them.

Raychem RPG lists separate accessory families for joints, terminations and switchgear connections. That is why a general request for a cable kit can leave several important choices unresolved.

Include the cable and equipment information

Share the approved cable datasheet and any dimensions requested by the accessory manufacturer. For a connection to equipment, include the equipment make, model and connection drawing where available. If any information is missing, identify it as an open point.

  • Cable voltage grade, number of cores and conductor material and size
  • Cable construction and the manufacturer's dimensional information
  • Joint or termination type and quantity
  • Indoor or outdoor location and project requirements
  • Equipment make, model and connection details
  • Required connectors, lugs or other items included in the scope

Check what is included in the offer

A kit description should make the scope clear. Confirm the offered part reference and ask which connectors or supporting items are included. Keep those answers with the quotation so that procurement and the site team are working from the same information.

The final accessory selection should be confirmed against the manufacturer's current selection information and the approved project requirements. Installation should follow the instructions supplied for that specific product.

Keep the enquiry tied to the actual cable

If the cable make or construction changes, send the revised details before confirming the accessory order. A previous kit reference is a useful starting point, not proof that it suits a different cable.
